More Fun at the Lathe Now available on DVD and Video Tape The first question we are always asked is "Is this tape suitable for the beginner?" Yes, it is being used by high school teachers. There are two projects that are particularly well suited for the beginner, a small tray and a bowl these are shown being made on the lathe from start to finish. More advanced projects follow after that, but the first two projects show the same basic turning procedures that are used to make the best and fanciest bowls that you will see being made on this tape. In very little time the beginner will be making bowls that will give him great satisfaction. A few years ago John Timby a Prototype Engineer designed this "Liberated Stave System" making it possible to glue tapered staves together to form any given bowl side angle from flat to perpendicular, with the aid of a simple home made jig and a drawing. These also help you when designing something new. This method of construction allows your work to exhibit the flower side of the wood, and not the end grain All Bowls and Urns are made from 3/4" thick wood. Some of the curvatures achieved would require wood 3" thick This means that expensive exotic woods can now be used to advantage at minimum cost. Perhaps the most novel thing is that big, deep, hollow, thin walled, narrow necked urns and bowls can be made by the once removed beginner, as there is no internal turning to be done John gains entry to all the best juried shows in his State, and gets four figures for his work. Anybody who is really interested can achieve this with a little practice.

All of the hard work is done on your band saw or lathe, Then with the
aid of very simple jigs, you are shown how to make beautiful things.
The only skill you need, is being able to round off straight sides so
that the curves blend together. There are many new things you can make using the liberated stave method ; all are very easy to make in nice easy steps, and as mentioned before only 3/4" thick wood is used. A lot of the curves could not be made with many of the exotic woods For example, where would you find 3" thick Ziricoti wood, its impossible, due to the small diameter of the Ziricoti Trunk. Or suppose the curve wanted 3" thick Cocabola?. It would cost the moon!. With the liberated stave system, these considerations cease to be a problem. Not only is there a decided reduction in the cost of raw material, but the work you produce will look much better. Juries who decide which work will be shown at the best shows will give you credit for creating a work of art, that up to the introduction of the Liberated Stave Technique was impossible to do John not only designed the system, but has applied his lifes work of reducing manual labor to a job, and make your machinery do the work for you. The tape is alive with short cuts or tips to confirm that things are going right. for instance when gluing a number of staves together on a simple jig, it is inevitable that you will build in a slight skew, John sees to that even, by a simple addition to your sander, the machine corrects the skew for you in minutes. by hand it could take a long and tedious time. The work is split into small sections, and at every section there is a very simple test, with a cure, should you need it, Innovations in the tape, start in the first section and continue right to the last, when you have the pleasure of having the finish taken over by a new machine you can assemble from ready made parts. This machines work is three fold. It helps you do the final sanding. Then all you do is apply a few full coats of polyurethane enamel to your work, and does both inside and outside of the bowl at the same time. This super coat finish, seals all the pin holes, with the result any humidity present is permanently sealed in. And you are left with the most beautiful hard to achieve piano finish, highly respected in both France and Italy, as a last coat you can apply your desired degree of satin finish. John has bowls painted four years ago that still retain the look of a newly turned bowl. Many of Douglas Corners bowls in our web site still look the same today, none have moved over the years. George Blackburn, author and past editor of "Woodwork" magazine says: "The tape is thorough and should provide all the instructions necessary for a complete beginner to master this novel branch of turning".
